Hai was arrested after information about a large-scale sea turtle smuggling line discovered by an operating object was discovered by ENV and notified to authorities in 2014. Suddenly the raid, the authorities discovered and seized nearly 7,000 sea turtles at six warehouses in Nha Trang - where Hai brothers used to collect, manipulate and trade sea turtles illegally. Most of the exhibits are tortoise-shells, a particularly endangered species of sea turtle that is strictly protected by law but is often illegally exploited to make decorative patterns or to make fine art articles such as combs, jewelry. , glasses.

The brothers Hoang Tuan Hai and Hoang Minh Cuong are said to lead a line that specializes in purchasing large quantities of sea turtles from fishermen, processing them into fine art products and smuggling them to China.

However, because during the investigation process, there was not enough evidence to prove Hoang Minh Cuong's crimes, only Hai was tried in the trial.
Ms. Bui Thi Ha, Deputy Director of the Center for Nature Education (ENV) said: “ENV was delighted at the results of the trial this morning. After a disappointing sentence for Nguyen Mau Chien, the trial of Hoang Tuan Hai's subjects created more confidence in the law's strictness. ENV would like to express our sincere thanks to the hard work and effort of the legal agencies in Nha Trang City and Khanh Hoa Province in the process of prosecuting and hearing the case. ”
With this result, Ms. Ha also called for the prosecution agencies to have ways to handle crimes about wildlife more effectively in many other cases: “We always need to investigate deeply to find the leading subjects. operating wildlife trade lines, at the same time conducting effective prosecution and applying the most stringent penalties to solve the problem of wildlife trafficking at its roots. The arrest of material evidence is not enough, our ultimate goal must be to thoroughly resolve and completely paralyze wildlife trafficking networks. "
It is time for the leaders of Vietnam's wildlife trafficking networks to be held responsible before the law for the illicit profits from the trading of endangered, precious and rare wildlife species which cause harm to the environment and life. human life as well as affect the reputation and image of Vietnam in the international arena.
