The demand for bear bile is the main cause of bear bile farming in Vietnam, threatening the wild bear population. Many Vietnamese still believe that bear bile is a panacea and choose to use bear bile instead of modern remedies, which are affordable and highly effective.

As of October 2018, the number of captive bears across the country was only about 800 individuals, a significant reduction compared to the number of more than 4,300 individuals kept in captivity in hundreds of facilities discovered in 2005. and demand for bear bile has decreased significantly. According to an ENV study published in 2015, the demand for bear bile has decreased by 61% compared to 2009. These are positive signs that Vietnam will soon end the situation of keeping bear captive for bile in the near future.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Dung, Deputy Director of ENV: “Bear bile is no longer suitable for modern society. Even so, we still have a lot of work to be done to completely eradicate this regressive bear captive activity. ”
